This year during the 30th Kagyu Monlam I will teach The Three Primary Elements of the Path. The root text is by the great lama Je Tsongkhapa, and I will be explaining it according to a commentary written by Jamgon Kongtrul Lodro Thaye.
The reason to teach this text is that the three primary elements, which are renunciation, bodhichitta, and right view, are like the core of the Mahayana path. Thus I think that teaching it will have the benefit that the many faithful people who come to the Kagyu Monlam will definitely understand the main points of the Mahayana path and then when they do their practice, they will not be mistaken about the main points.
The other aspect is that I am teaching The Three Primary Elements according to the commentary by Jamgon Kongtrul Lodro Thaye. This represents the essential theme of this year’s Kagyu Monlam, which is to remember the contributions of the Jamgon Kongtrul lineage. In particular, this year is the twentieth anniversary of the Third Jamgon Kongtrul Lodro Chokyi Senge passing into nirvana, and next year is the bicentennial of the First Jamgon Kongtrul Lodro Thaty’s birth. These two anniversaries coincide so because the most important of his deeds has been his teaching, we are having this teaching based on Lodro Thaye’s commentary on The Three Primary Elements of the Path. Thus there is connection in terms of the timing and I also think that it definitely will bring a great benefit to the many people from here and abroad gathered for this occasion.
